A descendant writes: "We were told that Captain Joseph (#731) died of yellow fever in South. He had lost a leg and was in hospital recovering. At one time we had letters that were written to his wife by a Capt. Unfortunately they have been lost." [Source 149]
Another descendent writes (06 January 2019), The letters he wrote had been lost, but I have transcribed copies of many of them. A cousin has the originals. His death info is not entirely accurate, either - he died of yellow fever, which was a separate incident from 4 years earlier when he lost his foot (ship caught in a storm, he was on the mast when it went over). The letters I have, he wrote in 1874 when recovering from that injury. Then one final letter from 1878 right before he died, probably the last letter he ever wrote to his wife; It’s heartbreaking knowing that - he writes of his hopes for his sons, that they never go to sea, and of how much he misses Maine blueberries
